Casa da Mariquinhas
Casa da Mariquinhas
Casa das Mariquinhas, a restaurant always appreciated by tourists, has reopened its doors for those looking for a typical and traditional place in town.
It is a local restaurant situated very close to the Cathedral, in a narrow street in the medieval area of the city. With a vintage-décor, its ambiance reflects the melancholic (saudade) side of Portugal in the early twentieth century and as such, there is an abundancy of live fado concerts on Fridays and Saturdays.

A Restaurant with Fado
Initially inaugurated in 1968, its current owners, Jorge Filipe Couto, the son of a cook, and Vítor Gonçalves, the son of a fado singer, decided to reopen this place because of their passion for fado.
It is located behind the Fernandine wall, which used to enclose the city, and has an imposing view of the Cathedral.
The head chef is Sandra Santos who combines traditional Portuguese gastronomy with contemporary cuisine. The specialties are cod Mariquinhas style (gratin with fresh mayonnaise, apple and bell pepper on top, served with vegetables and mashed potatoes au gratin), Mariquinhas meat and the traditional “petiscos”, i.e. “tapas”. We also recommend the Octopus a la Faial (cooked in wine) and don't forget to take a look at the dessert menu.
The wine list favors Douro wines and alternative producers, which are not common to find. In short, they want to promote small local treasures, like the place itself.
