Vegetarian restaurants in Porto

When you hear people say “You eat well in Portugal” believe them because it's true. And that includes vegetarian options as well.

If you were in Porto a few years ago you might have been disappointed by the offer, but today it's a different story. From Ribeira to the city center, vegetarian options are everywhere. There are many blood-free kitchens all over the city, with hands making an honest effort to serve different, delicious and healthy dishes.

Ah, if you thought the typical francesinha was out of your options, think again. Below, we leave you places that serve vegetarian and vegan fracesinhas.

Vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Porto

1. daTerra

daTerra is the first vegan restaurant chain in Portugal. They serve a varied and super fresh buffet every day for which you pay 12€ and you can eat as much as you want. If, like me, you associate buffets with questionable quality, that’s not the case here. On the contrary, it’s one of the places I go to eat when I’m in the mood for something delicious but also want to treat my body right. 

Address: They have several around the city: Bom Sucesso Market in Boavista, in the  Foz area and Matosinhos. Open googlemaps once you are in Porto, type daTerra and you will see which one is closest to your location.

2. Suribachi

A Simple buffet style restaurant, with homemade food and a menu that changes daily. Located in the Bonfim neighborhood, downtown Porto.

Really tasty macrobiotic food, reasonable prices and welcoming staff.

3. Kind Kitchen

Serves tapas like nachos, falafel or tofu nuggets. You will also find burgers, bowls, baos… This is one of the best vegan restaurants in Porto. It offers a wide variety of dishes, fun flavors, and international treats.

The space is very nice and pleasant and is located in Cedofeita, in a central area full of great restaurants, bars, and cafés.

4. Época

This bright cafe with daily lunch specials is located in the trendy neighborhood of Cedofeita. Good atmosphere, pleasant music and books to keep you entertained. Perfect for breakfast before exploring Porto's attractions.

5. O Macrobiótico

Vegan macrobiotic food restaurant with a daily lunch option. They also have a small produce store and homemade bread.

The food tastes like it is made with love. Generous portions.

6. O Porto dos gatos – Cat cafe

Café with vegan options and a room in the back with cats that are waiting to be adopted and in the meantime receive warmly the affection of those who want to visit them.

Like most restaurants in Porto, this place serves homemade food, lovingly prepared to order. Daily special.

They have a small, pleasant back patio.

7. Espécie – Restaurante Vegetariano

This restaurant, which offers a great atmosphere and excellent service, is located on Rua da Picaria, a street lined with restaurants, in the Cedofeita neighborhood.

Don't expect macrobiotic food here—instead, get ready for a feast for the taste buds. They serve dishes such as KFC (Korean Fried Cauliflower), noodles with shiitake mushrooms, moqueca, chilli, chestnut dumplings and curry.

8. Cult of Pita

Middle Eastern flavors in beautifully prepared vegan dishes. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable.

Everything tastes fresh, refreshing, and vibrant. The best pitas in town.

You can eat there or order takeout. It’s located in one of Porto’s busiest areas, so you’re sure to pass by during your visit.

9. TAB – TakeABreak

TAB isn't a strictly vegetarian restaurant. It serves dishes inspired by the cuisines of Japan, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam… and offers vegan, vegetarian, and meat-based options.

The daily special costs around €12 and includes an appetizer, main course, and drink.

10. Odete Vegan Bakery

They serve pizza, soup, salad, yogurt bowls, croissants, bruschetta, sandwiches, cakes, and even pasteis de nata vegan version!

Extra: Bao's Taiwanese Burger. It's not a vegetarian place, but they serve a delicious tofu bao—pair it with some fried sweet potatoes and you're all set for a happy day. Where? On Rua de Cedofeita. Check it out here on the map.

Vegetarian / Vegan Francesinhas

The francesinha is a culinary specialty of Porto. A dish with various types of meat inside two slices of bread, topped with melted cheese and a delicious sauce. There are already vegetarian versions that use ingredients such as mushrooms, seitan or tofu instead of meat.

If you're looking for a vegan option made at a vegan restaurant, Kind Kitchen is your best choice. If you don't mind eating at a traditional restaurant that serves all kinds of dishes, here are some recommendations:

11. Café Celia

This is a typical Portuguese cafe, with tiles all over the place, a noisy bar and a cheap daily lunch menu. It's not a vegetarian place, but they serve a pretty respectable vegetarian francesinha.

12. Lado B

The most famous francesinha house in Porto also serves a vegetarian option. In case you are traveling with non-vegetarians, this is the place where everyone in the group can try a good francesinha.

13. Yuko Tavern

On Costa Cabral Street. Just a few minutes' drive from downtown. If you want to try a delicious francesinha, it's worth the trip.

14. Capa na Baixa

It's not a vegetarian restaurant, but they do serve a vegetarian francesinha. Like the others, it is also a Portuguese restaurant with a traditional atmosphere.

15. Your Palace

Located in the Antas neighborhood is this traditional restaurant that serves vegetarian francesinhas as well as vegetarian “alheira,” a meatless version of a Portuguese sausage.

If you're in the Porto stadium area, this is a good option.
