The Romantic Museum
19th century Portuguese bourgeois house
The Romantic Museum
Contents
“Quinta da Maceirinha” is the location of the Romantic Museum of Porto, where the lifestyle of 19th century Portuguese bourgeoisie is reproduced.
Like the Casa do Infante Museum the romantic museum is part of the group of the city museums.
This house has a special interest, since King Carlos Alberto de Piemonte e Sardinia lived in it during the last year of his life. In addition, its attractive romantic architecture and privileged views of the Douro River set it apart from many other residences in the city.
The Portuguese Bourgeoisie
The 19th century bourgeoisie of Porto played a key role in the progress of the country, creating many of the big industries of the time. This same bourgeoisie, was responsible for promoting the republican ideals, which would later put an end to the rule of Portuguese nobility. The taste for Romanticism and Ultra-Romanticism was also cultivated by them and it is not by chance that many of the best authors of this period came from Porto, such as Almeida Garret and Guerra Junqueiro.
What to see at the Romantic Museum of Porto
The Museum has an exhibition of furniture, paintings and objects from this period, reconstructing in many cases the way the house was decorated during the period that King Carlos Alberto lived there.
Taking this into account, we recommend the visit only to those who are curious about the private life of this period, lovers of furniture and similar objects, because some visitors may see the exhibits as lacking content.
Nonetheless, It has a lovely cafe overlooking the river.
You can reach the museum from the Crystal Palace Gardens.
