How to Get to the Douro Valley from Porto

I’ve done the journey in different ways over the years, and each option offers a completely different experience of the region. The choice really depends on whether you value convenience, flexibility or the journey itself.

By Train: The Most Scenic and Authentic Option

One of the most beautiful ways to reach the Douro Valley is by train. The line from Porto runs along the Douro River, offering some of the most scenic railway views in Portugal.

The most popular route is from Porto São Bento or Campanhã station to Pinhão or Peso da Régua.

A round-trip fare costs around 25€ from Porto Campanha to Peso da Régua or Pinhão. Each trip takes about two hours.

What makes this trip special is not just the destination, but the ride itself. As the train leaves Porto, the urban landscape slowly disappears and the river begins to dominate the scenery. Vineyards, small villages and dramatic hills follow you almost the entire way.

This is the best option if you want a budget-friendly journey. But it takes about twice as long as driving.

Having a car allows you to stop at viewpoints, visit smaller villages and explore wine estates at your own pace. The Douro is not just about getting from one town to another, but about the landscapes in between, and a car gives you full freedom to enjoy them.

The downside is that some roads are narrow and winding, especially closer to the river and you should be careful about how much alcohol you drink if you're going to drive.

For many visitors, especially first-timers, joining an organized tour from Porto is the easiest way to experience the Douro Valley.

These tours usually include transportation, wine estate visits, tastings and sometimes even a river cruise. Some focus on wine, while others combine viewpoints, food experiences and boat trips.
